My first visit pass application was granted only a three month single entry visa. This visa was either issued by Malaysian High Commission in Singapore or Indonesia. I chose Singapore; the processing fee was SGD7. After this first exit and re-enter to Malaysia, I can then apply for my visit pass extension. Form Imm 55 for extension of visit pass and Form Imm 38 for visa application are required.
My husband has to accompany me for the submission of the Forms. A declaration letter (Surat Akuan) that we are still married issued by a Commissioner for Oaths has to be attached.
For my first extension application, I was given a three month social visit pass (the processing fee was RM 100) and re-entry visa (a single exit and re-entry visa cost RM 15). For second extension, I was granted another three month social visit pass (processing fee was RM 150). Again I had to apply for a re-entry visa because I needed to go back to my ex-company to assist them in the project I was handling at the time I resigned.
After three successive three month visit passes, I was eligible for the six month visit pass (the processing fee, surprisingly was only RM 90). The re-entry visa was also “upgraded” to multiple instead of single with same processing fee. After the six month visit pass, I was eligible for one year visit pass application. The fee is RM 90 too. After 5 renewal, I got the 4 years social visit pass together with a multiple entry visa for RM 90/year and RM15/year respectively. :)
Lately I heard that they have terminated the extension of visit pass for duration of more than 1 year (since July 2008, I think).

hi Chinnee, I have yet got my PR :(
oh, so complicated one
wow after all the process, i hope you will get a permanent PR status next.
your kids are lovely!
wow, really troublesome la..as trouble as my china visa..
Hi Martini, I think its ridiculous having to be involved with all that....for goodness sake, HE is a citizen, that should make you eligible to be one.
I have couple of friends back there, till today they are not citizens, even been there 40 years.
I guess each country has their own, but you will not get that here....
can even change your name too, no problems. I and my wife did.
Anyway, you stay easy Martini, best regards, lee.
constance chan,
I just submitted my PR application in the past 2 months :)
my friends who have submitted it for almost 2 years still have yet got it...
U.Lee,
what an excellent service you have there, can change name some more, wow!
thanks for sharing...
Yup, only can get one year visa. Unless those under spouse program and is working, they can get up to 5 years visa according to the passport. It's so troublesome to renew our visa every year, right?
hi Silvia, that's true, but I was lucky enough to get the 4 years approval before they terminated it in July 08.
Hi Martini,
My sis in-law is married to my brother for 10 yrs still cannot get her PR...She is a phillipino.
good that you managed to get the 4 years approval... :-)
hi lindalow,
I think I will be in the same boat :(
hi Martini.
about that thing..Malaysia really has a hard procedure to give citizenship to those who are not born in Malaysia, not just because the law said so but it is also related to the history.
back to 50 years ago, citizenship was one of the complicated and sensitive issue arose among people of multiracial and multireligion in Malaya.
If I'm not mistaken, Malaysia is also not allowing any kind of double citizenship.
But I hope you could keep cool with those matter. In the eyes o law, such thing is really not an easy one especially in Malaysia.
hi Faizal,
glad to see you again on my blog. You are true, it is definitely not easy to get citizenship here, so far I haven't thought about it :)
have a great week!
Its pretty troublesome yes. My sil has to go through this too.
Martini,
but I still hope you feel good and great to live in Malaysia. As Malaysia is a multiracial and multireligions country, sometimes it is hard to avoid misunderstanding and conflict among races and religions might occurs, but most Malaysians are trying the best to live in harmony.
My examination almost over, so do the blog hopping and commenting more often. :)
hi Faizal,
don't worry, I used to stay in a multiracial and multireligious country, so it might not a problem for me to adapt to my stay in Malaysia. I just hope I can get my PR approval before my 4 years visit pass over.
Thanks for your concern :)
it's begining of winter now in sudan. evening and morning are nice and cool. afternoon is similiar to malaysia, but very dry.
hi built62,
thanks for dropping by, hope you enjoy your stay in Sudan :)
Hello,
Thank you for your blog about this. I am trying to apply for extension of social visit pass and they are requiring my husband (Malaysian Chinese) to provide copy of his birth certificate which he have but the old birth cert. We have to request a new "edition" (the big one they said). We requested the new one in the Penang office for Birth Cert today and it is going to take 1 week before we can get the copy of his new BC to replace the old one. My visa is going to expire 2 weeks from now but I'm hoping that when I submit the extension application for social visit pass, I dont have to make a trip home as it is expensive. May I ask if you are aware that I can just go to Singapore or Thailand as "exit" then come back here in Penang to continue in applying for the social visit pass? I don't plan to stay here for good so I'm not really onto applying a PR. With extension of social visit pass or obtaining a 6 months or yearly pass is more than enough. Thanks again for this blog post which helps me understand the procedure that others have experienced. 2 other requirements I need to do in addition to the above:
Surat Akuan and Security Bond stamp which we have no idea how to fill-in the form. Hope you can help.
hi anonymous,
thanks for dropping by, you are most welcome, glad that I can share my experience with you :)
for the "exit" I am not sure as the procedure might be changed from time to time, it would be better for you to ask the immigration officer.
To share my experience with you, my visit pass expired before I got my first approval, so I went to Singapore as an "exit" at the last day before it expired and came back to Malaysia 3 days later. I got trouble at the JB entry point, the immigration officer questioned me about my visit, after explained to them that I was in the process of getting the visit pass application approval but failed to show them the proof (the application receipt and copy of marriage cert), they gave me 1 week visit pass only and I have to report to immigration office for clearance. I went to immigration office for clearance at the 14 days of my application, thinking that I could get the approval at the same time but I was wrong, they mentioned at the receipt after 14 days not at the 14th days! I was then given a 30 days "special" visit pass, the fee was RM100. So in your case, you can ask the officer whether you need to exit this country or just get a special visit pass before you get your extension approval.
for "Surat Akuan", you only need to fill in husband's name and IC No., wife's name and passport No., address, place of marriage and date, sign it in front of the "Commissioner for Oaths (PesuruhJaya Sumpah)", normally they will charge about RM 5. If you are not sure how to fill in, you can ask their help too.
for "Security Bond", I have totally forgotten about it, maybe you can ask the enquiry counter to help you. After fill in the form you need to get the stamp duty.
Hope the above information will help you, have a great weekend!
Thank you very much Martini for the reply and for sharing more of your experience. Earlier today, my husband and I manage to find a commissioner here in Penang to attend/affix their stamp on the Surat Akuan thingy. I then decided to go to Penang Immigration office to ask what to do with the Security Bond form and the guy there and the security guard were kind enough to help me fill-in the form. They instructed us to buy a "stamp" in post office then bring it to another government office called "Pusat Setem" that put a chop on the stamp with the "security bond form" and the "surat akuan".
I'm so glad that I'm done with the 2 things in one day :-)
All I have to wait now is "friday" to get the new birth certificate of my husband (to replace the old one).
BTW and if you don't mind another question, you mention in your blog that "Form IMM 12 – 2 sets" is one of the docs that you have submitted. I receive Form IMM 12 from them but they only gave me 1 copy of it. Does this mean, I need to get one more copy or I needed only to photocopy (xerox) it?
Glad that you wrote about the "14 days", I was expecting the same. I saw in a forum discussion that the application for extension will take 14 days only (thinking also that I can get a result on the 14th day). I will follow your great advice -- to ask the officer for a special pass for a fee or ask them if I can exit Singapore and I will make sure to carry the copy and original copy of the marriage certificate and the 'receipt' that I'll be receiving from Immigration (for extension of visa pass).
Again, thanks!
hi anonymous,
glad that you finally get the 2 documents done!
For form IMM 12, at the time I applied I needed to submit 2 sets, I am not sure now they still need 2 sets or only 1 set, I also don't know whether you can just copy it or must use original form in case you need 2 sets!
Maybe you can call the immigration office to check with them...
Hi Martini,
Thanks again for the advise. Finally, I'm done submitting all the documents today. I got 6 days visa left but they extend it for 30 days (special visit pass with RM100 as fee) after they accepted the application of the extension of visit pass.
Glad I don't have to 'exit' anywhere while waiting for the result of the said social visit extension. This save me time and money.
They gave this paper with several amount in ringgit, which they said I'll pay (bank draft) if the application is approve. Hopefully it'll be approved so my hubby and I are always together.
Again, thanks!
hi Anonymous,
you are welcome. Glad that your submitting went on smoothly. Wish you luck!
Have a great week!
Hi Martini,
I thought I thank you again for your blog about social visit pass. I got my 6-months extension of social visit pass today and it says multiple entry which "maybe" means I can visit Singapore, Thailand and other country without worrying that the 6-months will be void?
Thanks again for all the advise :)
hi Anonymous,
you are welcome, glad that you finally got your social visit pass extension and yes, with the multiple entry visa you can go anywhere, anytime and re-enter Malaysia within this 6 months.
Just remember everytime you go for extension before the current social visit pass expire, you need to submit the visa application as well.
Happy holiday!
Dear Martini,
i'm trying to apply for a social visit pass for my Indonesian wife, but the instruction is so vague! Particularly, i don't understand much about the security bond. I've got the stamp from Revenue Department (cost me RM10). is it that i should pay the Immigration Department RM500 when summit my application? if YES, can it be cash or must be bank draft, and who must it be payable to?
Thanks for your kind attention!!
Edwin
Dear Edwin,
You are welcome!
I paid the RM 500 deposit by bank draft, payable to "Ketua Pengarah Imigresen". I remember they didn't receive cash but not sure whether you can bank in to their bank account or not? It would be better to check with them as it's been quite some time since I applied mine, maybe you can try to call and ask ...
As for Security Bond, I am sorry that I have totally forgotten about it. You can read the first feedback from Anonymous above re Security Bond. Glad to know that she finally got it done with the information from the guy and security guard at the Immigration office.
