His Primary One Performance

Last Thursday Teng Hong came back with his school report card. I am quite happy to see his Primary One result. Despite that he suffers ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), he still managed to pass all the subjects. He even scored 95% for English subject. Others are ranged from 59.75% to 96%. He gets an average rank in the class, 28 from 48 students.

Keep up the good work, boy!
Mummy hopes you can be better next year.

All this while, his teachers complained that he couldn't concentrate during the lessons; his attention span is extremely short. He was seated alone right at the front of the class, next to teacher for a few months. He was kept “under the nose” of teachers.

While doing his exam, he was not able to concentrate too. One of his teachers said she had to call him many times to remind him to do his exam until she had to stand near him.

A few times when I went to pick him up early from his class, I could see instead of facing the teachers who was teaching in front of the class, he looked at something at the back or did some other things.

During his Tae Kwan-Do class he is not able to focus too. I can see him looking around while practicing. But I must admit that he is now much better than two years ago. A parent also told me about that.

Talking about homework, he hardly copied back the homework list; luckily his school provides a website for parents to check it online. Homework is something really tortures him; he will nag or cry every time I ask him to do. It takes him a few hours to start doing it no matter how we motivate him. Daddy even offers him RM1 if he can finish his homework before 6.00PM. He wants the money so much because we only give him pocket money once in a while when he did something really good or when he gets all correct in his spelling test. However, he could only get daddy’s offer less than 5 times for this whole year.

He had trouble in copying his homework from whiteboard. Most of the time, he couldn’t able to copy it all. Sometimes he even didn’t copy at all. I couldn’t figure out why? His therapist said that he will help me to assess him in this case.

Though he completed his homework daily with mummy’s guidance, he always didn’t hand-in his homework. Afraid I will scold him, he left them in his school desk’s drawer. There was once I spot-checked to his class and found out that he left 18 textbooks, workbooks and exercise books there. Just imagine!

He is very much disorganized. I think he is the messiest student in the class and in the school. Books and accessories are all over the desk and floor. According to teachers, when they asked him to pick up, he will take his sweet time to pick or sometimes he even didn’t pick up. Just imagine he lose 4 or 5 boxes of color pencils, dozens of pencils and erasers, a few sharpeners, rulers, textbooks, exercise books, wallets, etc in a year.

There was once I followed him quietly to his class and saw his school bag lying down on the floor near the classroom’s door. Instead of put it at his seat, he just simply put down and went to see his friends playing badminton. *slap head*
Everyone who entered the classroom should walk aside to avoid stepping on his bag.

Almost every day he came back with a very dirty knees, face and uniform. I have to use the shower brush to help him clean the knees. I guess he must be crawling on the ground.

Since there are so many complaints from teachers regarding his poor concentration and some other problems, like: slow movement, poor hand-eye coordination, etc., last August I managed to get an appointment with a Psychiatrist. He was diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive type.

Last month he started his therapy at a “Terapi Cara Kerja” to train him to be more focused. With this monthly therapy plus home training, I hope that he will have significant improvement in this near future. I really hope he can outgrow the disorder soon.

School holidays starts today, Teng Hong is so happy and has been asking for his birthday present. Soon he will turn SEVEN!
