Side Effect of the Second Booster Double Antigen Jab

As part of school health programs, yesterday my seven-year-old boy got his second booster Oral Polio and Double Antigen jab at his school. He told me that he felt scared and cried after the jab. It was painful and he kept complaining the jab area was painful when he went to sleep. I thought he only wanted to make a fuss, so I didn’t really attend him, only told him not to lie down on the jab’s side.

This afternoon when he came back from school, I was shocked to see his left upper arm, the place where he got the jab yesterday. It looked big, swollen, red and hardened. He never got any side effect from immunization since he was a baby.

I tried to call a clinic which we always visited, but instead of getting an advice, the doctor told me to bring my boy to let him check, sigh!

Later follow a friend’s advice I applied heat pack on the affected area with the hope it can soften the hardened site, then follow sister-in-law’s advice I applied cold pack to ease the soreness.

At night, he even complained that the jab area was very itchy and I had to give him anti-histamine to ease the itchiness, then only he dozed off.

Poor boy, hope you get well soon!

Finally It’s Over!

Being a foreigner and a first time mother to a Primary one student in this country, I was a bit shock to see their half year assessment schedule. Just imagine, there are 14 exams to be carried out in 9 days (3 weeks time).

What surprise me more, during the exam days they also have lessons and homework as usual, sometime the homework is even much more than usual. *fainted*

Compare to my niece’s school at my home-town, Medan, there are only about 7 exams for Primary one. During the exam days, they don’t have any lesson and homework; after the exam, the students can go home to prepare themselves for next day exams.

Back to here, the past three weeks were really a tiring weeks for my seven year old boy. This was the first time he had exam in Primary school. He had to do his homework and revision for the subjects for next day exams which can be one or two subjects. For the first two weeks everything was going on smoothly, but at the third week suddenly he felt sick.

He had high fever 40C, headache and vomited on Sunday. Got a sick leave on Monday; there was no exam on that day. Luckily, the fever subsided later that day after he took two doses of antibiotic, otherwise I would be sick worry that he might be infected by H1N1 virus.

The next day he insisted to go to school though he had a severe cough. There were two exams on that day. I was a bit worry about him and his exams. I afraid he would feel drowsy cause I fed him the vomit and cough medicines. So I went to pick him up earlier (after his second exam). He was quite blurring as he told me he had only one exam??? There should be two exams on that day.

During the third week exams, every afternoon he napped for more than 3 hours but couldn’t rest well at the night. It might be due to the medicines effect besides he had not fully recovered yet. Pity him; there were 7 exams in this week and he needed to do revision for those exams. I asked him to leave the homework as he won't have enough time to do them. At the last day of exam he really got bored and tired, he couldn’t focus while I was guiding him through-out the revision. So I just told him to try his best in the exam.

Finally it’s over and he can get some rest before his homework time again!
