My Journey to Be a Malaysian PR (Permanent Resident)

It started nine years ago when I got my first three month social visit pass.

As a foreigner (wife of citizen) in Malaysia, I needed a social visit pass to stay and a re-entry visa to travel during my stay in this country. So every time before the social visit pass expired, my hubby and I needed to go to the Immigration Office to get the renewal.

After three successive three month visit passes, I was eligible for the six month visit pass and after that; I was eligible for the one year visit pass application. Since then we only needed to renew my visit pass annually. Later after five times of one year visit pass renewal, I managed to get 4 years visit pass (4 times of one year visit pass given at a time). This reduced our visit frequency to the Immigration Office.

In September 2008, five months after I completed five times of one year visit pass, I submitted my Entry Permit Application (Permohonan Permit Masuk) to Pusat Bandar Damansara Immigration Office. There are many documents to be attached and all of them should be copied in A4 size paper. Actually I can submit the application as soon as I completed the fifth one year visit pass, but hubby was busy at that time and later I totally forgot about it.

At the submission, I was given a receipt (Akuan Penerimaan) and a date for interview. It was about two months later. The interview was done in Malay Language and as an Indonesian I didn’t have trouble to understand it.

In January 2009, I got a letter from Pejabat Ketua Polis to attend an interview regarding my Entry Permit Application. After that there was no news until November last year, I received a letter from Putrajaya Immigration. It informed me that my application has been given attention and appropriate action.

I was so happy when I received a letter from Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia Putrajaya early this year. Inside the “Urusan Seri Paduka Baginda” letter written that my Entry Permit Application (Permohonan Permit Masuk) has been approved and in order to get my Entry Permit issued, I have to submit a RM 120.00 Bank Draft, three passport size photos with blue background, copy of latest social visit pass, “surat akuan sumpah perkhawinan masih kekal” to prove that our marriage still exist, copy of children’s birth certificates and hubby’s MyKad. I also need to comply with the conditions stated in the letter.

It was about a week before Chinese New Year, so a few days later when hubby was on leave and Teng Hong had cny holiday, after sent Xin Yi to school we headed to Putrajaya Immigration Office for the documents submission. The submission queue was not long but we needed to wait for the documents to be processed. Afraid we won’t have enough time to pick up Xin Yi from school, we told the officer that we will go back to get the Entry Permit after lunch time.

My Entry Permit was ready to be collected when we got back to the counter. I was told that I can straightforward apply for my PR Identity Card (IC).

Soon we reached Putrajaya Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, I got the ticket number and enquired for the documents needed to apply for the IC. Since there was a long queue, we had time to have our lunch and prepare all the needed documents.

Upon submission I was asked to choose which JPN I wish to go to collect my IC, then again I had to queue for photo session. After that I needed to go back to the counter and was given a receipt.

We can call JPN to check the approval status after 3 months of application.
The first time when I called them after 3 months, my IC application has been approved but not yet printed, they advised me to call back in a week. Later when I called again, it was ready to be collected.

So yesterday, we went to Putrajaya JPN to collect my IC. It is called myPR or Red IC.

Finally, I am a Malaysian PR!

Hi Linda,
Thanks. :)
Yes, it is PR but when you apply they call it "Permit Masuk".

Just follow the procedure given. In your next visit to Immigration Office you can ask them for the list of documents need to be prepared for the "Permit Masuk" application.

All the best.

Congratulation Martini, at last... how heart wrenching and exhausting to get a M'sia PR let alone IC, a few of my Indian friends encountered the same problem too, but thy finally gave up and apply for Singaporean's instead!:)

i've applied for my PR in June now waitting for the immigration and police interview. I'm nervous, what kind of question will they ask ?

Hi Anonymous,

For your info,
Hubby and I were interviewed in the same room. It didn't take long time. The immigration officer asked us how and when we met, how long we get to know each other before get married, what was my occupation, how many children do we have, etc.

At the police station we were asked to fill in forms.
The police officer then asked us about our education and some other questions related to the info that we filled in the forms.

Remember to bring all your original documents to the interview in case you need to show them, especially your passports since you stay in Malaysia.

All the best.
